Trish, thank you so much for organizing yesterday’s panel. Quoting Biden, this is not just hyperbole: the entire 2 hours I was present was staggeringly eye-opening and sobering and awe-inspiring. I was close to tears several times. Many thanks to you, Justin and Douglas for helping inform our knowledge of the NM criminal justice system. I appreciate the additional reading, too.
Abrazos,
Mary H Smith

Subject: [Lwvcnmtopics] Thank you for your interest in our NM Prisons Panel
Hi everyone!
I'd like to thank all of you who attended our panel on NM Prisons today, either in person or online. What a powerful conversation with Justin and Doug. Special thanks to Linda, Jennifer, Starlyn, the Karens, Jeanne, Michelle, Mary, and all of the supportive guests who asked questions and shared stories.
Both Justin and I wanted to share something noteworthy if you'd like to read more:
* From Justin: a summary of his work with Ole on voting rights and people-first language<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fVAYo92Sv6sEOapiMbnzQCm_-8io_HWJsBRJr_2I8Dk/edit>;
* From me: a past article on big tech's exploitation of people who are imprisoned: How Companies Make Millions Charging Prisoners to Send an Email<https://www.wired.com/story/jpay-securus-prison-email-charging-millions/>
And for those of you who wanted to attend but couldn't, shoot me an email for the Zoom recording.
Cheers!
Trish

Justin has taught "Decarcerate Yoga" in our community as a harm reduction technique, with the understanding that individual healing is community healing. He is interested in reducing the harm of state violence and has been a community organizer in several local grassroots organizations since 2017. Justin holds a B.A. in American Studies from UNM, with a minor in Peace Studies, and has been working on the restoration of voting rights for formerly incarcerated people for the last 5 years. He is currently working as the Inclusive Democracy Organizer at OLÉ.
Douglas Carver joined the New Mexico Sentencing Commission in 2017 as its Deputy Director. Before this time, he led a nonprofit focused on government ethics and was a staff attorney at the NM Legislature’s Legislative Council Service, working principally in the areas of criminal justice and government ethics. He has a B.A. from Yale University, an M.Phil. from Trinity College, Dublin, and a J.D. from the UNM School of Law.
Trish Lopez is a past LWVCNM board member and creator of Teeniors (tech-savvy teens empowering seniors), whose mission is to help older adults feel more confident in our increasingly digital world -- while providing paid, meaningful jobs for youth in New Mexico. Trish's #1 priority is raising her 10-yr old daughter, Kaia. She also chairs the Digital Inclusion group for New Mexico Technology Council and is an advisory member of the New Mexico Local News Fund, supporting independent journalism around the state.
