I think turning Lead and Coal into two way streets would be a poor decision. Think it is difficult or dangerous crossing those streets now? Wait until ART. Now imagine if they are two way, one will have to look both ways and cross and slip in between oncoming cars from both directions at each road. I think the accident rate would go up exponentially with side impacts. Also thinking of two way traffic on those streets, imagine all those who turn left onto the neighborhood streets and what that will do, stopped, waiting ....... impatient drivers possibly looking to go around via the on coming traffic lanes, the honking for someone to "GO!", cars bumper to bumper up and down the streets emitting non-stop exhaust. I also think that the potential for head-on collisions is far greater as it will only take a momentary lapse of attention to swerve slightly into oncoming traffic causing a collision or causing another car to hop the curb, knock down trees, kill a pedestrian, run into a house or into a back yard in an effort to avoid such a collision. On the other hand, it would eliminate most drag racing (except for those who might chance it anyway and cause a deadly head-on collision). It could also eliminate the speeding and replace it with a slow moving or completely stopped line of traffic from I-25 to Washington. These are my thoughts; I am a fellow concerned citizen and neighborhood resident/home owner living South of the one-ways, raising a young family and using these streets multiple times per day.
I have no hard facts or researched statistics to back any of these feelings up. All I have is 30+ years of personal experience in driving these streets and anticipating what "the other guy" on the street is going to do.
I cross these streets multiple times daily with my family, both in a vehicle and on foot.I have no solution for the current problems. I wish I did!I only see a multitude of potential problems with the ART diversion of traffic and the potential "two-way" Lead and Coal suggestion.I read this letter all the time but respond rarely. My opinion is a two-way solution would be disastrous.

I agree if neighbors don't live on Lead/Coal it is harder to understand the situation. But I think neighbors make suggestions because they are hearing your dilemma and they want to help. Do you have a viable solution we can support as a group or recommend to the NHNA board. Thanks Susan

Has anyone given any thought as to those who buy a condo at The Carlisle, how they will be able to get in or out of their parking garage underneath the building during Summerfest and shop & stroll, since the entrance to the garage will be on Carlisle.???? I know that street closure doesn't occur very often but if I lived at The Carlisle, I would not be very happy being stuck in all day or if I was out for the day, not being able to return home until the street re-opened.

Since my driveway is one of the best parking spots in NH - the best parking spot anywhere in NH, I walk everywhere anyway. Hopefully the Carlisle Nob Hille?os will appreciate the fact they will always have a "great parking spot" too. If it upsets them this year, maybe not-so-much come another Summerfest or two.

I've had a thought running around in my head for a while about all the changes that are happening in Nob Hill. Being a Pollyanna by nature, I am hoping for some positive unintended consequences resulting from A.R.T. (I still have trouble referring to it as art) and the displacement of vehicles from Central to the parallel streets.
Having grown up in Los Angeles and experienced all the gridlock freeways and alternate routes out there, it becomes clear after a while that the more vehicles you have on a road, the slower traffic travels. Can we hope that as vehicles move over to Lomas, Campus, Silver, Lead and Coal, the congestion will naturally slow traffic and reduce the incidence of drivers behaving badly? I happen to live on Campus and surely hope so. We can't stop it from happening, so now to observe what happens and push for mitigation if needed after we see the results. There is a lot of racing on Lomas, too, but I imagine the risk of a head-on collision does send the serious racers to the one-ways of Lead and Coal. Let's all keep working on solutions and hoping we can find common ground to approach the city with. Wish us all luck.

The primary problem here appears to be the double lane one-way streets that are now straight and thus, provide good opportunity for racing. What do neighbors who live on these streets think about changing both Lead and Coal into two-way streets? Which would eliminate racing and all the noise, etc. that goes with it. Just curious...S
