Juan,

Susan Michie’s letters are a model of lucidity and careful analysis. The last thing they are is “irrational.” You don’t have to agree with her, as you obviously don’t, but she made clear to anyone willing to read carefully that she does not oppose alcohol, or alcohol in restaurants in principle. What she does not want to see is the transformation of a mixed-business neighborhood like ours into a bar-heavy district along the lines of Downtown. You may not think this is a likely outcome, but believing it to be probable is not irrational.

For our part, as people who agree with Susan Michie, we think that the entire system of alcohol regulation in New Mexico creates these problems. It should be no big deal for restaurants to serve beer and wine, and/or hard liquor. But in this environment, with licenses hard to get, the concentration of bars in one small area can turn out badly.

She opposed the expansion of the Walgreens liquor department last year. I went in there last night, the place was great, with a wide offering of products for our community that includes New Mexico produced craft beers. I witness none of the hypothetical, inevitable ill effects.
