The 4:1 ratio is safe and ideal for the hummingbird diet. If you put feeders out late, the birds were likely already using other sources. They will eventually come around. Also birds lay low while they are sitting on a nest. So perhaps in a week or so when babies become active…
(these are just guesses based on observations of hummers and other birds)
