[Neighbors] Mini split heating and cooling

We installed nini-splits in the back to rooms of our house around 2020-21. Those two rooms only had a gas floor heater which worked well for 90ish years. The valve started sticking, so, we shut down the floor heater and installed mini-splits. BTW it was nice to have both air-conditioning and heating in those rooms.
The first year after instillation, our electric bill skyrocketed.
Here is the learning - which should have been intuitive - turns out that the mini-split unit is designed to cool/heat say 250 square feet. We had been leaving the doors to these two rooms open and the mini-splits were running constantly to maintain the set temperature. When we started keeping the doors shut the electric bill came more into line.
Although it is much more expensive (and yes there are tax credits for this) replacing the whole system with central heat and air may be a better choice

Would you please reply if you have had good experience and good cost on anyone installing mini splits? Thanks!
