[NMCCSC] Report on Sking Redondo CG Area, Sat., Jan. 5

Hello Skiers,

On Saturday, January 5, thirteen Ski Club members enjoyed the 16 inches of powder snow in Redondo Campground area in the Santa Fe National Forest in the Jemez Mountains. Tom and Louise Broadbent, who live in La Cueva, had reported that the road were clear, and we parked in the plowed parking area across the highway from the campground. The snow was excellent in the morning, but by lunch it was sticky in the sun, and skiers applied Maxi-Glide so that snow would not stick to the skis.

The group crossed NM-4 and entered the campground where they skied to the left (west) around the 2.5-mile Loop Trail that leads to a large meadow at the north end of the loop. The forest had been thinned, and we found no trees down across the trail. We were able to follow the route by following several blue diamonds on trees and an old set of ski tracks. The Loop Trail was very easy with very little elevation change, but after lunch we found low hills and two small craters on the Crater Spur Trail. These craters are associated with the volcanic activity in the Valles Caldera that was formed by an eruption 1.25 millions years ago. The largest crater we visited was about 100 feet deep with a diameter of a few hundred feet.

I appreciate Lynda Katonak's staying with two inexperienced skiers so that they could enjoy the snow and complete the tour.

The skiers on the outing were Bronwyn Willis, Geri Newton, Ellen Bauman, Marcy Dorchester, Kim Kaufman, Daniel Salazar, Peter Kiefer, Holly Noland, Tom Katonak, Lynda Katonak, Sybil Keyser, David Mayerson, and Sam Beard.
