[NMCCSC] Report of trail work on Los Griegos Mtn. in Jemez, Fri., Oct. 18

Hello Skiers,
 On Friday, October 18, 2019, Ski Club volunteers drove to the Jemez Ranger Station where Brett Flaharty, Jemez Ranger District Trails/Wilderness/ Developed Sites Manager, joined us, and we went to the Corral Canyon Trailhead on NM-4. As had been forecast, winds were high there, and we decided that it would not be a good idea to work in this area with many dead trees that had been killed in the Las Conchas Fire in 2011.
 We drove back to the Los Griegos Mountain parking area and hiked a half-mile connecting trail to the Squirrel Canyon Trailhead on Upper Road. As we hiked up this trail, Dean Athow nailed several blue diamonds to trees where they were missing. We were fortunate to have four chain saws – Brett’s USFS saw and three saws brought by Bill White, Sam Beard, and Jerry Carroll. The lower half of Squirrel Canyon was in areas of green trees and in areas where the Cajete Fire burned a few years ago. The upper part of the trail was mostly in green trees.
 Brett left the group about noon to meet a busload of school children to hike the East Fork River from Las Conchas Trailhead and talk with them about Leave No Trace. We removed about 20 down trees on Squirrel Canyon Trail that had not been maintained since the Cajete Fire a few years ago. This trail will be enjoyable to ski this winter, if the area has adequate snow. We hiked back to the highway on parts of the Elk Ridge and Ladera Trails. After working two days on Los Griegos Mountain this year, we have not yet maintained the upper switchbacks on Ladera Trail, but we will work on them next year.
 The volunteers were Wendy Cox, Mike Meier, Jerry Carroll, Dean Athow, Michael Arndt, Bill White, and Sam Beard. Ski Club members appreciate the work done by these Club members that will make this trail more enjoyable this winter.
