[NMCCSC] Report of Trail Maintenance in Jemez, Fri., Oct. 25

Hello Skiers,

On Friday, October 25, five volunteers continued maintaining Corral Canyon and Calzada Trails in the Jemez Ranger District.

From Corral Canyon Trailhead (8657 feet elevation), the group hiked up to Junction Meadow and removed four down trees from this old road route. They then completed fall maintenance of Calzada Trail by removing 11 trees from the route on the ridge west of Junction Meadow.

Mike Meier joined the group here at lunch, and everyone rode in Mike's Forester to Tee Intersection. From here they hiked on the upper part of Corral Canyon Trail to the NE and E and up to the overlook on Boomer Mountain (9407 feet) with views of Sandia Mountain to the south. Many years ago we found  a rock inscribed with the word "Boomer" and assumed that ashes of a pet named Boomer were scattered here. This part of Corral Canyon Trail lies in an area where all the trees were killed in the Las Conchas Fire eight years ago. We removed approximately 50 trees from this trail where a high wind event (bomb cyclone) occurred last winter. Only one segment of Corral Canyon Trail remains to be cleared, the route from the overlook to Forest Road 282.

After hiking up 750 feet with two chain saws and removing 65 down trees, we were happy to ride back to NM-4 in Mike's vehicle.

The volunteers were Mike Meier, Jerry Carroll, Dean Athow, Byron Garner, and Sam Beard.
