Greetings all,
We ventured out again yesterday and found total snowfall on the crest was well over a foot! Driving was a challenge again and so was parking. We got to the 10K parking lot and dug out a parking space with our shovels. It was about 10:30 with breezy conditions and bright sun. The temperature hovered just below freezing. We were surprised to find no one had skied the upper 10K meadow at all probably due to the lack of plowing for driving and parking. We slogged through the 14-inch powdery snow easily missing the trails that lead to the Ellis trail system. With as many times as I’ve skied the groomed trails during the season it is always surprising to me just how difficult it is to find the trail in deep fresh snow and drifts! We ended up climbing a lot through the trees, enduring constant sticking ski conditions. We stopped early on to put on Maxiglide which helped to some extent. When we finally did reach the Ellis Parking area we were spent! A quick break had us on the Service Road skiing through post-holed foot traffic. We got stuck behind a dozen snowboarders on their way to the ski hill. On the return we decided to forge our own tracks on the Rocky Point Trail. Sticking was a problem again and it was slow going, but it was better than the post-hole path on the Service Road! We hit up the Maxiglide again for the descent down Challenge to the upper 10 K meadow. It was much easier to find the trail on the way down. We were glad to get back to the car as we were both totally exhausted. We helped a couple of Forestry employees dig out their truck at the 10K lot and then watched the giant plow attempt to dig out the parking lot!
All in all, it was a difficult ski but still worth being out!
Cheers,
Amy
