Hello Skiers,
On Friday, Nov. 6, five Ski Club members completed fall maintenance of the East Loop of the East Fork Trail in the Jemez Mountains. We parked in the Los Griegos parking lot and hiked across NM-4 to the Burn Trail that leads to a connector that goes to the west end of the loop.
We removed 15 down trees, and the maximum diameter was 20 inches. We were using a Stihl MS-251 saw with an 18-inch bar, and a Husqvarna 440 saw with a 16-inch bar. The logs were bucked into several pieces and moved off the trail. Several blue plastic diamonds were nailed to trees to mark segments of the trail better. Also, branches on a few trees were pruned with a pole saw so that skiers will not hit them as they pass.
The hard working volunteers were Mike Meier, Jerry Carroll, Bill Savage, Neil McCasland, and Sam Beard.
Photos are presented in the attached Word document.
P.S. The barbed wire fence around the old pumice mine on the south side of the loop has been removed. Senior members of the Club will remember that the original loop trail followed a road that was later removed by the mining process. We will check the terrain just north of the mined area to see if it is feasible to move the trail back to that area. The route along the north side of the mine maybe better than the present route that we are using.
