Hello Skiers,
On Friday, March 5, Bob Moore, Michael Arndt, and I skied Corral Canyon Trail in the Jemez Mountains. The trailhead is located about one-half mile southwest of Valle Grande. We put on skins to climb to Junction Meadow and skied on skins all day to make climbing easier and our descents slower in the variable snow conditions.
We had planned to ski to Junction Meadow on Calzada Trail, but skiing on the hard crust on the mountainside was too difficult. We walked down into Corral Canyon and skied up the old road to Junction Meadow. We then skied up to the east end of Corral Canyon, turned to the west and skied to the ridge top where we could see the Sandia Mountains. After lunch and putting on MaxiGlide, we skied down and around this ridge to Tee Intersection. We followed snow cat tracks back almost to the trailhead.
The temperature in the afternoon was 50F. We skied about 4 miles, the elevation change was about 750 feet, and we were on trails for five hours.
Photos of the outing are presented in the attached Word document.
Sam
