Hi skiers,
Today I went back up the Crest and parked at the very crowded Ellis lot.  There were a lot of snowshoers, skiers, and folks out just enjoying the snow.  I didn't get up there until almost noon so I'd say the temperature was in the upper 30s.  It is melting fast!  I applied MaxiGlide right from the start and I really needed it.  I ascended Switchbacks and veered off onto the Survey Trail.  Survey FINALLY had full coverage.  It was a lot of fun, but there was a bit of stick/glide/stick/glide, making for some challenges.  I re-applied wax at the 10K junction.  Instead of turning around and going back up Survey, I decided to try my luck going back on North 10K.  I'm usually all happy with the fun on Survey and think, "Oh what fun it will be to make this a loop!"  In order to do that you have to get down the steep section leading to the Osha trail junction.  The trail was already packed down by snowshoers so to slow my speed I just floated slowly through the trees so I could survive.  After that the climbing started.  I didn't really find it too bad at all.  I did have some sticking issues, so I was very grateful that snowshoers packed down the trail and that kept sticking to a minimum.  I usually do this loop once or twice a season and so I'm familiar with the steep sections.  How do you get through it?  Have a positive attitude.  Tell yourself it will be an awful, grueling climb and that it will never end.  Believe that and all of the sudden you find yourself at the 10K parking lot!  The most difficult part was climbing up the 10K meadows to get back to the Ellis parking lot.  I was tired of climbing and melting conditions were making a crust on the sun-exposed surfaces.  Glad I went out again today.  It's disappearing fast!!!
