[NMCCSC] Alone again, naturally.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m really quite social, but there are times when it’s nice to get away from it all and let the peaceful quiet of nature soak in.
Five of us skied FR144, the dirt road heading north from NM4 at the top of Fenton Hill, yesterday. We arrived at the trailhead at 9:30 and it was 21F, under intensely blue skies and virtually no wind. The cold temperatures during the week had preserved the 4” of new snow, so conditions were excellent. Since snowmobiles had been up the road in the past few weeks, the trail was well consolidated. The coverage was great, with the exception of a couple of south facing hills, one of which was pure dirt. We tip toed up the frozen dirt on the way in, and removed our skis and walked around the mud on the way back. We skied north on the road for about 4 miles, then found a nice sunny, dry hillside for a lunch break, before returning back to the cars. We were out for 4 hours and didn’t see another soul. Be aware that there are ups and downs on this road going both directions; there is actually more gain heading south back toward the trailhead than when heading north, so plan accordingly. Most of the road, especially with the great snow conditions that we enjoyed yesterday, is suitable for beginner skiers.
