Celebrate New Mexico Railroad Days At WHEELS Museum!




Celebrate New Mexico Railroad Days at WHEELS Museum on September 28 & 29 from 9am to 2pm! We welcome one and all to visit the amazing WHEELS Museum on the downtown Albuquerque Rail Yards at 1100 2nd SW. The museum has over 10,000 rare and historic transportation exhibits and other items. WHEELS Museum began 30 years ago to save the iconic steam locomotive repair shops and the rail yard of the Santa Fe railroad. The museum is located in the rail yard’s old store room. 





Individuals from across New Mexico, the nation, and the world contributed to the establishment, operation and ultimately the success of the Albuquerque rail yard and the railroad. 

When the rail yard was operational, there were over 400 types of jobs.  Many workers were employed as laborers. Others became apprentices and learned skills such as blacksmiths, boilermakers, machinists, and mechanics- which were physically challenging occupations. Other jobs were agents, bookkeepers, engineers, conductors, clerks, crane operators, red caps, porters, secretaries, straw bosses, iron moulders, foundry hands, flagmen, firemen and more.
