Hello Everyone:

Today, Wednesday 15, 2019, a small FOSM crew worked with the three new District summer recreation workers and the SRD Fire Crew to prepare the Cienega Canyon Picnic Area for opening this weekend.

FOSM and the recreation staff gathered and transported previously cut wood sections from the picnic area back to the Ranger Station. This wood came from fallen trees that had been cleared away from various locations in the picnic area. The branches had been stacked for chipping, which was also completed today by the Fire Crew. This wood is stored at the Ranger Station where it will be picked up by charitable organizations in the East Mountains where it will be split into firewood for winter distribution to needy families. A total of four full truck loads were taken out today.

The Fire Crew also worked to remove a large fallen tree that had crushed one of the picnic tables in a group located at the far top end of the PA. The table was beyond repair and is being removed for safety reasons.

The FOSM crew finished a spring cleanup of the accessible nature trail by removing some remaining slash and also spruced up the walkway and table pads by removing forest litter and dirt washed in by the rains. Rakes, shovels, brooms and a gas powered leaf blower were used or these tasks. The recreation crew still has a few minor jobs to finish, but it appears that the PA will be ready for visitors by the weekend.

FOSM member Don Carnicom replaced another broken plank in one of the nature trail bridges today. All now appear to be in good order.

The FOSM crew today consisted of Jerry Pekarek, Jim Levesque, Lou Romero, Sally Lowder and Bob Lowder.
