Hello Everyone,

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, eleven FOSM volunteers removed the shingles from the north side of the Yucca restroom in Oak Flat Reservation Picnic Area and installed a steel roof with materials purchased about 3 years ago by the Cibola National Forest. The old shingles and felt were taken to the Tijeras transfer station for disposal.

The very old shingles were curved up, and leaking water had damaged the plywood sheathing in about a half-dozen places so much that two large pieces of plywood were installed to order to have a solid deck to which to screw the steel roofing panels. A steel drip edge was screwed to the eave edge of the plywood, and 30-pound felt was stapled over the plywood. The steel vent structure was removed, Anne Hickman and Ellie Parker painted it with Forest Service brown paint, and it was reinstalled before the steel roofing was installed. Steel R-panel roofing from the Mueller Company in Moriarty was screwed over the felt. After the south roof has been installed, a wide gable end trim piece will finish the project.

The volunteers were Lou Romero, Sam Beard, Phil Cromer, Anne Hickman, Sim Cook, Russell Parker, Eric Russell, Ellie Parker, Dan Benton, Jim Levesque, and Jerry Pekarek.

The roofing project is shown in the attached Word document.
