Hello Everyone,
On Wednesday, September 25, Jerry Carroll, Eric Russell, and Sam Beard filled four potholes with cold patch in the 10K North Trailhead parking lot and in the upper parking lot at the Crest. All the potholes filled on Wednesday were small to medium-size.
They used twenty-five 50-pound bags of cold patch that were stored in the SRD shop. The manufacturing date on the bags was May 2018. Potholes were last filled in the summer of 2018, and the volunteers then noticed that the small gravel was coated with a "wet" binder. The material in the holes filled with the "fresh" cold patch in these two parking lots is still in good condition.
The "old" cold patch material used on Wednesday was relatively dry and crumbly and did not stick together as well as the "fresh" material did. It was the opinion of the three volunteers that the material used on Wednesday will not perform well. We will check these holes later to learn if this cold patch is still in good condition. It appears that cold patch material should be used relatively quickly after we receive it and that it should not be stored for over a year.
The attached Word document shows the pothole filling process.
