[Volunteers_fosm] Report of paint crew project in Juan Tabo PA on Tues., June 30

Hello Everyone,

On Tuesday, June 30, FOSM paint crew members Anne Hickman, Jane Harrison, Nancy Peterson, and Sam Beard met at Juan Tabo Picnic Area to remove graffiti and paint over graffiti on painted surfaces. Sandra Coambs, SRD Archaeologist, and Manny Chavez, SRD Maintenance Supervisor, had requested this project in the area of the CCC stone shelter near La Luz Trailhead.

The only graffiti remover that the group had was an 8”x12” towel saturated with a “Natural Citrus Oil” in a foil pouch with the name Graffiti Safewipes produced by the World’s Best Graffiti Removers Company in California. No other graffiti removal products were available to Anne and Jane when they went to the SRD shop earlier in the morning. The one towel successfully removed a small area of black print on the west side of the stone shelter.

Sam applied dark brown paint over a small area of white graffiti on one of the roof beams in the stone shelter. He also put two coats of white paint over red and black graffiti on the interior walls of the CCC stone restroom at the parking area near the shelter.

The group located the group of five tables mentioned by Sandra, but there was very little graffiti there. They did find other graffiti on various surfaces with the largest being an approximately 48”x 72” boulder area covered with orange and yellow spray paint.

Sam later purchased a gallon of the World’s Best Graffiti Remover from a local paint store and will use it in an attempt to remove the red and yellow paint.
