Hello Everyone,

On Wednesday, July 1, five FOSM volunteers completed the installation of four broken or rotten fence posts in Cienega Canyon and Sulphur Canyon Picnic Areas.

Project photos are presented in the attached Word document.

Replacing a fence post may appear to be simple, but it is very labor intensive. The operation involves cutting off the end of a rusty threaded rod with a hack saw, removing the rod, nuts, and washers, supporting the fence poles, digging out the old post, cutting the new post to a length of 6 feet, installing it in a hole and tamping rocks and dirt around it, drilling two or four 5/8-inch diameter holes with a long spade bit, and installing the new 1/2-inch diameter threaded rod and washers, and tightening the new nuts. We recycled most of the old rods, washers, and nuts, and some rods had to straightened with a small sledgehammer.

Three posts were replaced in Cienega PA, and one was replaced in Sulphur PA. Digging out the bottom of an old post is not too difficult when the wood is rotten but extracting the bottom of a sound post that has been broken requires digging down almost 24 inches on at least on side of the post. Four leaning posts were also straightened and reset with rocks and dirt.

The volunteers were Don Carnicom, Dan Benton, Jerry Carroll, Dennis Crowther, and Sam Beard.
