Hello Volunteers,
On Wednesday, July 1, Dan Benton and I will lead a project approved by the SRD to replace rotten/broken fence posts in Cienega Picnic Area. Jerry Carroll will haul replacement posts from the FOSM Guard Station to the picnic area in his pickup.
We will be removing the fence poles from the posts by removing rusty 1/2-inch threaded steel rods and nuts that secure the poles to the posts. The fence was built to be vandal-proof with countersunk square nuts and sealed threads, so disassembly can be tedious, but we need to salvage the poles to re-use them. We will use battery-powered drills to drill holes in the new posts. We will use the old threaded rods when possible and new threaded rod in other places. Existing post holes will be used, but will have to cleaned out.
Bring battery-powered drills, long spade bits, hack saws, long punches, 3 or 4-pound sledgehammers, and other carpentry tools. Deep socket wrench sets will be used to remove nuts.
We will follow the Covid protocols for volunteers published by the SRD. In addition to the usual PPE, please bring a face mask.
Meet at the FOSM Guard Station at 8 am. We will drive private vehicles with only one volunteer in each vehicle, except for family members traveling together.
Bring work gloves, hard hat, snacks, lunch, and drinks, and wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt.
We plan to have two crews with a maximum of 5 volunteers in each group.
Volunteers must contact me directly at samgbeard at msn.com mailto:samgbeard at msn.com by 5 pm on Monday, if they plan to work. A reply to this group email will delay receipt, because it will have to be forwarded to me. Shortly after that time I will notify the volunteers who will be working on Wednesday.
