Hello Everyone:

On Monday, April 26, 2021, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew, armed with a crosscut saw and other hand tools, hiked Tree Spring trail to the Oso Corredor junction, Oso Corredor to the Faulty trail junction, and finally Faulty to Bill Spring trail. Unlike last week's hike on Pino trail, there were no complicated projects to complete this time, but there was plenty of clean-up and routine maintenance to do. Protruding branches from a fallen fir tree were cut back from Tree Spring trail as were any other hazards that could interfere with safe passage. There was a poorly suspended fallen tree top adjacent to Tree Spring located just above the Oso junction. This hazard was still seen in place the previous Saturday. By Monday, it had fallen to the ground. It was moved away from the trail.

Almost all the remaining work was along Oso. About ten trees or portions thereof that were either leaning across the trail or protruding into it were removed. These ranged from four to twelve inches in diameter. There were also about fourteen dead oak trees ranging in size from about one to three inches in diameter that were leaning over the trail low enough to present a hazard to hikers or especially to those on horseback. These were either cut or simply knocked over and dragged away. A well supported hang-up and a very stable leaner remain on Oso. These were carefully studied and should not pose a hazard to users any time soon.

A twelve inch diameter fallen fir tree trunk was removed from Bill Spring trail. Trimming back overgrowth and general clean-up work was done as needed along the entire route. As of Monday afternoon, these trails and trail sections were clear.

Monday's crew consisted of Byron Garner, Sally Lowder, David McCreery and Bob Lowder. All photos by Sally Lowder.
