Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, Monday, June 21, 2021, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked 10K South and Tree Spring trails to check out previously reported hung-up or leaning trees and to do whatever trail maintenance was required. In addition to some minor trail tread work, the crew analyzed all the hang-ups or leaners that were found along both trails. The ones that were completely stable were left in place until such time as that status changes. Those that were considered a hazard were removed.
A dead fir hang-up that was about 10-inches in diameter at its base and another about 4-inches in diameter were removed from Tree Spring trail. The trunk of a long dead fallen fir on the ground next to Tree Spring trail had been protruding slightly into the trail tread. After most of the rotten wood was broken away with a Pulaski, about 20 inches or so was cut back away from the trail to eliminate a possible tripping hazard.
The big project for the day was a two-tree hang-up on Tree Spring previously reported by Jamey Browning. Both were live fir trees. The larger one was about 7-inches in diameter and the second about 4-inches. The smaller tree had been forced down by the larger tree and formed a significant spring-pole under it. While the fallen trees could be passed under with a couple of inches of clearance by a person of average height, anyone on a bike or horseback would get a face full of branches. The smaller bent over tree was removed first and then the larger fir was taken down. On the way out, the crew did some minor cleanup of branches on a fallen tree that had been previously removed from the trail just above the trailhead.
The morning was pleasantly cool, but as the day went on, it became increasingly apparent that summer had begun. It is still very dry on the mountain, but some of the wildflowers are doing their best to make things look almost normal. Where the trails do not consist mainly of rock, they are very dusty. As of yesterday afternoon, both these trails are clear.
Yesterday's crew consisted of Rav Nicholson, David McCreery, Cleve Sharp, Bill Savage and Bob Lowder.
Please see attached Word document for photos and additional narrative. All photos by Cleve Sharp and Bill Savage.
Thanks,
Bob L.
