Hello Everyone,

Several months ago the 10,400-foot vegetation sign on the Crest Highway just above Ellis Trailhead fell over, because the post had decayed. This very heavy sign is 66 inches tall, the width at the top is 64 inches, and the width at the bottom is 48 inches. The redwood front is 1.75 inches thick, and the plywood back is 0.75 inches thick. I stained the redwood and repainted the letters with white and turquoise paint.

The project on Wednesday, August 2, will be reinstalling this sign on the left side of the highway as you go up the Crest Highway. The tasks will be moving the sign and large wooden post to the site and digging a hole in which the post will be set in concrete. The sign will then be hung on the post with a ½-inch bolt through the top hole in the sign. After the sign is leveled, three other bolts will secure the sign to the post. The post will be fabricated by bolting together two pressure-treated 4x6s. Lowe’s does not stock pressure-treated 6x6s or 8x8s.

Meet at 8 am at the FOSM Guard Station behind the Ranger Station. Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring snacks, drinks, lunch, a hard hat, and eye and ear protection. We may be using the FOSM auger and manual post hole diggers. The post hole will be 2 to 3 feet deep. Also, bring appropriate tools for this project.

We will need several volunteers to just lift and move the sign.
