Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, Monday, October 16, 2023, the FOSM Trail Maintenance Crew hiked Survey trail and a short section of 10K North trail to evaluate a previously reported fir tree hang-up partially blocking 10K about 150 feet above the Survey junction. The tree is about 15-inches in diameter and is poorly supported by another tree at its top. It is firmly attached to the roots at its base. As is always our practice, the crew performed a detailed analysis of the situation After all remediation alternatives were considered, it was determined that the safest and most practical solution was to simply re-route the trail away from its location under the leaning tree.
It was necessary to remove several sizable logs and other forest debris from the planned re-route as well as building a short section of new trail. Various old logs, fallen branches and other "junk" was used to close off the old section of trail that passed under the leaning tree. Silky-type saws and other hand tools were used for this work. The trail is clear and it is now safe and easy to pass by the leaning tree. Survey trail and 10K above the junction are now clear.
The day was quite cool in the morning (low 40's/high 30's) and mostly sunny with an occasional light breeze. As usual, it warmed as the day progressed. Although it appears that the Aspens are past their prime, there is still a lot of autumn color to enjoy. It was a good day for a hike.
Monday's crew consisted of Byron Garner, Rav Nicholson, Jerry Pekarek, Jamey Browning, Ken Wilson, John Cooper and Bob Lowder.
Please see attached Word document for photos and additional narrative. Photos by Bob Lowder, Jamey Browning and John Cooper.
Thanks,
Bob L.
