Hello Everyone:

Yesterday, Monday, April 29, 2024, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked portions of Cienega, Faulty and Cienega Horse Bypass trails to remove previously reported fallen or otherwise problem trees. A crosscut saw, Silky saws and other hand tools were used for this work. The first two trees, one 21-inches in diameter and the second 8-inches in diameter were blocking Cienega trail in the wilderness section. These were the trees that the crew did not have time to remove on the previous Monday session. These two trees were removed and, as of Monday afternoon, Cienega trail is now clear along its entire length. The last tree addressed was an eight- inch diameter dead fir that was leaning over the Cienega Horse Bypass trail towards its north junction with faulty, which made it difficult for persons on horseback trying to pass under it. After careful study, it was determined that the crew did not have the right equipment to safely remove it, so it was left as-is. A wide bypass trail was constructed uphill from the tree to aid those passing under it on horseback. It was later reported that the USFS/SRD trails staff plan to return with a chainsaw to remove the leaner.

It was a nice spring day, with comfortable temperatures, an occasional light breeze and sunny skies, basically, a perfect day for doing trail work.

Yesterday's FOSM crew consisted of Byron Garner, Rene Archer, Rav Nicholson, Bill Perkins, Jamey Browning, Ken Wilson, Sim Cook, John Cooper and Bob Lowder. USFS/SRD Trails Crew members Jennifer Medina-Gray and Dorothy Hendrix also participated.

Please see attached Word document for photos and additional narrative. All photos by Rene Archer.

Thanks,

Bob L.
