Subject: RE: Paddlesports public hearing
Hi team,
I just wanted to let you know that the public hearing on paddle sports
laws was very interesting, productive and we had a great turn out with
14 members from the meet up. A number of us testified, giving our
opinions.
The basic feedback was:
* Great updates to laws - much needed
* We support
* Kayaks not needing a bailing device anymore
* Kayaks not needing a rope the length of our boat anymore
* Kayakers required to have a whistle
* PFDs required
* Questions/ feedback from paddling community
* Why are we required to have a light source (after
talking with the rep, this seemed to make more sense)
* Why aren't laws more stringent for inner tubes - at a
minimum, they should be required to have PFDs, especially on whitewater
* Why aren't helmets on whitewater not included anywhere
in laws
* Ensure anchoring and mooring laws do not apply to kayaks
After the meeting, Toby Velazquez requested time with all of the
paddlers and we had a nice discussion. He is planning on following up
with a few of us for additional thoughts.
I'd strongly recommend that you provide a testimony, either in the form
of a phone call or email supporting the law changes or giving any
additional feedback. It is a very important move to demonstrate that
there is a paddling community that is alive and cares. Given some of the
potential discussions on the table on a broader scale, if we can show a
presence in this process, it will have a meaningful impact. Information
can be found at the website below. You'll want to review: 18.17.2 NMAC,
