Hello Everyone,

At the request of Kerry Wood, SRD Trails and Wilderness Program Manager, and Elke Schuster, SRD Recreation Staff Officer, FOSM volunteers have worked several days preparing Cienega Canyon Picnic Area for opening on May 15.

The FOSM crew felled several hazard trees, Don Carnicom and Sam Beard removed a large Rocky Mountain juniper from the central paved path, the crew cleaned up along the Nature Trail and piled slash to be chipped, and Lou Romero and Steve Roholt removed two obstructions from Acequia Trail. The crew hauled several pickup loads of bucked fuel wood to the hazmat building, and on Saturday, May 4, Sam and Michael Arndt limbed and bucked a double trunk RM juniper adjacent to the road between the two lower restrooms. Most of this work was reported earlier. Photographs of the obstructions removed from Acequia Trail and the double trunk juniper are attached.

On Wednesday, May 8, FOSM volunteers will continue to clean up Cienega PA by working on two and maybe three tasks requested by Elke -- chipping slash along the road and in the group area, hauling bucked wood to the hazmat building, and starting to limb and buck the very large fir tree that fell and crushed a picnic table.

1. Chipping Slash -- All the slash has been piled along the PA road and In the Group Area parking lot.

2. Hauling Fuel Wood -- The double trunk juniper wood is piled on the road shoulder, and, if the 12-inch felled hazard tree near the upper gate is bucked, wood will also be piled there. We will need a second USFS pickup to haul the fuel wood.

3. Begin Limbing and Bucking the Fallen Fir at Cienega Spring -- If the crew has time, they will begin limbing and bucking the 3-ft to 4-ft diameter fir at the fence around Cienega Spring in the upper part of the PA.

Meet at the FOSM Guard Station at 8 am to load equipment. Note the earlier meeting time. Please park in the north front parking lot and walk to the Guard Station, or we will meet people in the front parking lot and have the JHA there.

Wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring work gloves and hard hats. If you do not have a hard hat, one will be provided. Sawyers are required to also wear 8-inch high boots and chaps. Bring eye and ear protection. Swampers working near saws are also required to wear chaps. Bring lunch, snacks, and drinks.

If you have questions, please email me at samgbeard at msn.com.
