Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, Monday, November 18, 2019, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked sections of Survey and Rocky Point trails plus all of the Crest Nature Trail to remove previously reported fallen trees. Crosscut saws and other hand tools were used for this work.
Ho/Buss submitted a weekend report describing 5 fallen trees on Survey trail. These trees measured from 5 to 14 inches in diameter. All 5 trees were removed. Someone had submitted a report some time ago identifying a fallen 16 inch diameter tree blocking Rocky Point trail. After work on Survey had been completed, the crew then hiked out Rocky Point to remove the tree. Upon arrival at the location of the reported tree, the crew discovered that it had been removed by person or persons unknown as whoever did the work did not report it. Based upon the nature of the cuts, it appeared that the work had been done with a chainsaw.
A report had also been previously submitted by the Happy Hoofers hiking group that a tree had fallen on the Crest Nature Trail. Their group adopted this trail in honor of Pearl Burns. The crew moved to the Crest from Rocky Point to remove that tree. Although the crew hiked the entire length of the Crest Nature Trail, both lower and upper loops, no fallen tree was found. Apparently this tree had also been removed by person or persons unknown, again without being reported.
Although these examples of unreported work caused only a minor inconvenience for the crew, that would not have been the case if the reported fallen trees required a hike of hours to reach but were not there when the crew arrived. This has happened in the past. Yesterday is yet another example of the importance of reporting work done out on the District trail system via our FOSM CTR group or personal email. Of course while the maintenance work done by folks using the trails is greatly appreciated, having that work appropriately reported will prevent the waste of time and resources.
Monday's weather started unusually warm at the Ranger Station (50 degrees at 8:00 am) but low 40's and a brisk breeze was a reminder that at 10,000 feet of elevation, it really still is late November. The trails were
mainly dry with brief patches of icy, hard packed snow in a few shaded areas.
Yesterday's crew consisted of Byron Garner, Jim Levesque, Jerry Pekarek, David McCreery, Rav Nicholson, Cliff Giles, Sim Cook and Bob Lowder.
