Hello All,

On Wednesday, November 4, eleven FOSM volunteers completed two tasks in Cienega Canyon Picnic Area – bucking a large log and replacing ten rotten or broken fence poles.

1. Bucking log and splitting rounds – Lou Romero’s team bucked a large white fir tree that had been felled as a hazard tree a few months ago. The rounds were then split with sledge hammers and steel wedges so that the pieces would not be so heavy when they are loaded on a pickup to be hauled to the ranger station. There they will be collected by the Mountain Christian Church Wood Ministry and distributed to needy families in the East Mountain area. After lunch a few volunteers bucked another large log near the second restroom.
2. Replacing 10 poles in the picnic area fences – Other volunteers removed ten decayed or broken poles from Cienega PA fences and replaced them with the 10-foot long poles recently purchased by FOSM. The damaged poles were removed by cutting the nuts off of rusty ½-inch diameter threaded rods with a hacksaw or the FOSM DeWalt battery-powered reciprocating saw. The new poles were secured with recycled old hardware or new threaded rods and nuts.

The volunteers were Jerry Pekarek, Sam Beard, Lou Romero, Eric Russell, Cliff Giles, Bill Savage, Jerry Carroll, Dennis Crowther, Sim Cook, Don Carnicom, and Byron Garner.
