Hello Everyone,
This email reports the FOSM paint project on Tuesday, October 13, and the hazard tree felling project on Wednesday, October 14.
1. Paint Project – On Tuesday, October 13, the FOSM painters went to Cienega PA and striped four parking areas. We stared at the upper lot by the trailhead and then moved to meadow lot and into the reservation site. The first two lots went pretty quickly. The lot at the reservation site required more attention. Russ moved several pieces of a bucked oak that had fallen in the handicap space. He shoveled the space and used the high powered FS blower to clear debris and pine needles that were scattered across the parking lot. While we striped, he continued with the blower down the nature trail around the curve that goes to the first little bridge. If the wind gives us a break, the trail will stay clear for a day or two.
Our next parking lot was where the nature trail starts. By lunch traffic was increasing so we knew it was time to quit. Many folks were enjoying the beautiful day and canyon.
Volunteers were Rikki Barrett, Jane Harrison, and Ellie and Russ Parker.
Photos of the paint project are presented in the attached Word document.

1. Hazard Tree Felling Project – On Wednesday, October 14, twelve FOSM volunteers felled a 34-inch dead ponderosa pine cigar butt tree at the Ski Area Overflow Parking Lot between Dry Camp Trailhead and the downhill ski area. The various tasks involve in felling the tree, removing limbs, bucking the trunk, splitting rounds, and hauling the wood to the Ranger Station are shown in the attached Word file of photos. The trunk was cut into 15-inch lengths, but even the split pieces were very heavy. In the future, we will go back to cutting the trunk into 12-inch pieces. The approximately two cords of wood will be donated to the East Mountain Christian Church Wood Ministry for distribution to needy families in the East Mountains.
The volunteers were Cliff Giles, Sam Beard, Jerry Pekarek, Sim Cook, Jim Levesque, Jerry Carroll, Byron Garner, Bill Savage, Lou Romero, Eric Russell, Lorna Morrow, and Dennis Crowther.
