Though I’ve only rarely used it, I do not find the back-in parking to be harder to use than parallel parking (the way it was and is now being suggested). I did find it a bit of a surprise the first time I encountered it and spent a few heartbeats trying to figure out what the traffic folks wanted me to do. I suppose others do too.
Are many people still first encountering it or never quite figuring it out? Has the slowed-down traffic surrounding it been a problem for the pedestrians crossing the street to use the larger parking lot just south of it? Or is the problem with folks driving cars and not expecting to be driving on a slowed-down pedestrian friendly bicycle boulevard marked street?
